What is a tournament entry fee?

A tournament entry fee is what you pay to enter the online poker tournament. The fee is usually between 5 and 10% of the tournament buy in and is not to be confused with the actual buy in amount of the tournament, as the buy in creates the prize pool and the entry fee is the amount charged by the online poker room for operating, managing and administering the tournament.

Entry fee example

When you see a tournament on offer in the poker room lobby you will see that usually there will be a format such as this...$10 + $1 and the $1 will be the tournament fee. The $10 will go towards the prize pool and the $1 fee goes to the poker room for the reasons stated above.

What types of tournaments charge entry fees?

Almost all tournaments will charge you an entry fee, including sit n go tournaments, multi table tournaments, large guaranteed tourneys as well as satellites and qualifiers. The only online poker tournament where you will not be charged a fee to play is a freeroll.
